After years of cleaning hundreds of bathrooms in Sheboygan, I’ve learned that the difference between a bathroom that stays clean and one that gets grimy fast comes down to a few simple habits. Here are the five tips I share with every client.
1. Squeegee Your Shower After Every Use
This is the single most impactful habit you can build. After every shower, take 30 seconds to squeegee the walls and door. Water left on glass and tiles is how soap scum and hard water stains form. A good squeegee costs $5 and will save you hours of scrubbing.
Pro tip: Keep the squeegee hanging inside the shower so there’s no excuse not to use it.
2. Use a Daily Shower Spray
Once a week isn’t enough to prevent mildew buildup in humid bathrooms. A daily spray — either store-bought or a DIY mix of water, white vinegar, and a few drops of tea tree oil — keeps mold and mildew from ever getting a foothold.
Spray the walls right after squeegeeing. You don’t need to rinse it off.
3. Keep a Toilet Brush Soaking in Cleaner
Instead of scrubbing the toilet once a week, keep your toilet brush holder filled with a small amount of cleaner diluted in water. This keeps the brush sanitary and makes it easy to do a quick 20-second scrub every couple of days.
Consistent light cleaning beats infrequent heavy cleaning every time.
4. Wipe Down Surfaces After Every Use
The sink, faucet, and countertop take under a minute to wipe down. Toothpaste, soap, and water droplets are easy to clean when fresh — and almost impossible to remove once they harden and stain. Keep a microfiber cloth under the sink for this.
5. Don’t Forget the Exhaust Fan
This is the most overlooked part of bathroom maintenance. A clogged exhaust fan can’t remove humidity, which leads to mold on ceilings and walls. Every month, vacuum the vent cover to remove dust buildup. Twice a year, remove the cover and clean the fan blades.
